Hello there! Today we're going to be talking about the absolute most important fundamentals of Survival games to date.

As in any Survival game one of the most important thing you need to remember is to keep your character alive by feeding it and obtaining fluids to keep them hydrated.

This guide aims to help with ensuring that when you start your character you are informed enough to accomplish this.

First off, there's a couple important things to remember about the Hunger/Thirst system of Rend.

  1. Sprinting (Holding down the Shift key) will make your food/thirst go down faster.
  2. You can always gather berries and use them at will via your hotbar (auto equipped) to sate your food/thirst by quite a pretty good amount should the need arise.
  3. There are always water sources near faction portals in the world, be sure to keep an eye out for these if you are in dire need of sustenance.

Now to get down to the nitty gritty.

The first thing you want to do when you first spawn into the game is make sure you keep an eye on your hunger/water, if you start getting low you'll want to make your way to a water source and make use of the berries outside your immediate vicinity until you can get a water sack crafted.

Let's start it off with the berries. Luckily the berries in Rend can sustain you far better than in many other survival games. So you could last a long while just off of the berries alone. For a better description of what they look like, check below:

Make sure to also map out your surroundings and make sure you know where the water sources are, they are an excellent source for keeping you alive. And keep the fiber you get from the berry bushes, you will need it later.

Now the next step is to get yourself a hunting weapon. When you first start out, you'll have 3 options if your faction is unable to provide you with one.

Sharpened Stick[ | ]

Throwing Stones[ | ]

Makeshift Bow[ | ]

Bow

You will most likely only have the resources to make either the Stick, or the Throwing Stones, when you craft these you will want to also have a stone pickaxe handy and a hatchet if you can obtain one.

The process to making those two tools are found in the woodcutting and mining guides.

When you go out to hunt, make sure you only go for the small boars.

You will be able to tell the difference between the big ones (hostile) and small ones (passive) based upon how they react to you and the screenshots below.

The small ones will always run away from you when they detect you.

Boars[ | ]

Little Boar

When you kill one, you'll want to get your pickaxe out and start harvesting it for Raw Meat.

One small tip to remember:

- A pickaxe will give you more Raw Meat as a yield

- A hatchet will give you more Fur Scraps, Leather Scraps, & Hide (Elks) as a yield

This'll be what Raw Meat looks like when you obtain it:

After that you'll want to work on getting access to a campfire.

You'll want to use that stone axe to harvest a couple pine trees for some sticks or wooden logs to keep the fire blazing.

If your faction doesn't already have a campfire this will be the recipe to making one:

Wood Logs, Cobblestone, Flint

When you open the campfire the menu will look something like this:

Campfire Menu

You'll want to drag the raw meat into the campfire along with the wood and click the "On/Off" button in the bottom right.

After that you'll want to click on the "Cooked Meat" crafting button on the left side to begin cooking the meat. And then after a short while you'll have yourself a well balanced meal!

- Be sure to note that both meat can still spoil in your inventory whether it's Raw or Cooked. Make sure to make the most of it.

Now that you know how to hunt for your own food, you may begin to notice that your character is still getting thirsty quicker than you can handle.

What we can do to fix this situation is teach you how to make your very own Water Skin. To start it off, this is what the recipe of the Water Skin will look like:

Water Skin - x12 Rough Weave, x20 Fiber Twine

Water Bag

To obtain the resource you need to combine with Fiber Twine to make the water skin (called Rough Weave) you need to have access to a Tinkering Table.

Right off the bat when a faction gets started in Rend this will be one of the first buildings to be constructed in your base so if your faction does not already have one currently you may have to wait until one is built.

This is a better look at what the Tinkering Table will look like and the Rough Weave/Water Skin recipes.

As you can see they are very close in the Tinkering Table and you shouldn't have much issue crafting the rough weave since it takes Fiber Twine to craft also. Which you should have plenty of from gathering from the berry bushes.

  • Fiber Twine is made from combinding Fiber in the basic crafting menu (Hotkey C by Default)

After you've got yourself a Water Skin (preferably 2 or more) you will want to head to the nearest water source to get it filled.

Afterwards you will have a portable source of water to go along with your cooked meat for those long adventures and resource runs!

The last quick tip to remember is that you can put your Water Skin, Cooked Meat, and Berries on your hotbar located in the bottom right corner for easy access at any time.

Hopefully this guide has answered your questions on how to survive in the world of Rend and if you liked this one please stay tuned for more guides including the Intermediate Hunting guide that will go along with this. Thanks for reading!
